Another major storm has left more than three feet of snow blanketing Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort since Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.

“In about 50 years, I’m going to be telling my grandkids about this storm,” said Jodie Stackhouse, a guest who was snowboarding Tuesday morning. “I could really use a snorkel out there!”

The Little Cottonwood Canyon resort has received 222 inches of snow this season, and more snow is in the forecast through Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service.

“Skiers and snowboarders are thrilled to have such amazing conditions,” said Dave Fields, Vice President of Resort Operations. “The snow is waist-deep, but blows over your head when you are skiing down the mountain.”

Located just 29 miles from Salt Lake International Airport, Snowbird is North America’s most accessible resort destination.

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company Presents TWO - Kaleidoscope

Ririe-Woodbury Presents
TWO - Kaleidoscope

Ririe-Woodbury Offers Last Chance To See Nikolais In SLC For Years.
February 1-2 at 7 pm, February 2 at 2 pm at the Capitol Theatre.

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company presents, TWO - Kaleidoscope, a show for all ages, on the stage of the spectacular Capitol Theatre, February 1 and 2 at 7pm and February 2 at 2pm. Kaleidoscope features some of the most-loved dances by choreographic genius Alwin Nikolais. The performance include “Gallery,” which premiered in Salt Lake City last year, as well as audience favorites such as “Tensile Involvement,” “Noumenon Mobilus,” and “Kaleidoscope.” This will be the last opportunity to see Nikolais works performed in Salt Lake City for years.

Garish clowns, frolicking in a black light filled arcade, set the stage to entertain us in excerpts from the bitterly hilarious “Gallery,” being shown for only the second time in Salt Lake City. Giant elastic bands that define space like an enormous cat’s cradle give form to the exciting work “Tensile Involvement.” “Noumenon” fascinates us with dancers moving in strict unison, creating dynamic forms while completely enshrouded in silver bags. The work “Kaleidoscope” brings strange-footed dancers balancing on discs, men hanging precariously out in space and a pair of dancers on a journey while balancing a long pole between their feet. The final section, a statement on fashion, features outlandish costumes, which are changed on a whim by the characters on stage.

The New York Times wrote, "There is still nothing else like 'Kaleidoscope' on the stage today—even in the Nikolais repertory. Anyone who has not seen it, should." This exciting collection of Nikolais’ works is great entertainment for people of all ages.

Nikolais’ unique, multi-media dance theatre has served as an inspiration for current artists such as the Blue Man Group, Cirque du Soleil, Pilobolus, and Momix. Ririe-Woodbury is the only professional dance company licensed to perform a full evening of his works since his death over 16 years ago, and the entire production is under the artistic direction of Alberto del Saz of the Nikolais/Louis. Former Ririe-Woodbury dancer Elizabeth Kelley-Wilberg and dancers Kai Medeiros, Aaron Perlstein, and Jacquelyn Potts-Hand lend their talents to the Company as guest dancers for the entire production.

In addition to the public performances, Ririe-Woodbury will perform five student matinees, which are open and free to all Utah schools. Approximately 7,000 students and teachers will see this performance at no charge thanks to funding from the Utah State Office of Education POPS Program, the Utah Arts Council, the Salt Lake Arts Council, and Ririe-Woodbury corporate, foundation, and individual sponsors who also play a large role in allowing the continuation of these matinees.

Tickets available at arttix.org, 801-355-ARTS, or any ArtTix Box Office.

Snowbird Launches Blue Bird Ski Discount

Inversion Diversion:
Snowbird Launches Blue Bird Ski Discount

Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is offering a $20 discount on lift tickets on days it deems the inversion in the Salt Lake Valley is most intense, helping residents escape the poor air quality of the city and enjoy the clean air in the mountains.

“Although you can’t see it from the valley, the skies are blue and the sun is shining at Snowbird during most inversions,” said Dave Fields, Vice President of Resort Operations. “We’re calling it the ‘Blue Bird’ discount to remind locals that the air is clear at Snowbird.”

Snowbird will announce the Blue Bird discount days on its Facebook and Twitter pages, www.Facebook.com/SnowbirdUT and https://twitter.com/Snowbird, by 5 p.m. the day before the discount will be offered. Guests may then ask for the Blue Bird discount at any Snowbird ticket window to receive $20 off a full-price all-day adult lift ticket, and $10 off a full-price all-day child (age 7-12) lift ticket. The resort is also offering a $10 discount on ski and snowboard rentals at Creekside Sports on designated Blue Bird days. To receive the discount on rentals, print the coupon at www.snowbird.com/winter/rentals/creekside/.

The first Blue Bird day will be tomorrow, January 18. Snowbird encourages visitors to carpool or take public transportation to the resort. Information on Utah Transit Authority’s Ski Service may be found at www.rideuta.com/mc/?page=RidingUTA-SkiService.

“We’re trying to create a silver lining for the inversion, and not contribute to it,” said Fields. “Please carpool or take the bus to the resort to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road.”

Cottonwood Canyons Foundation Receives 11,602 Volunteer Hours in 2012

Cottonwood Canyons Foundation Receives
11,602 Volunteer Hours in 2012

The Cottonwood Canyons Foundation (CCF) announced it received 11,602 hours of service from its volunteers through its educational and environmental stewardship programs this year, including pulling invasive weeds, creating and maintaining trails, and education programs such as guided tours and school field trips with elementary school students.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the extraordinary gift of service we’ve received this year from volunteers,” said Jessie Walthers, Executive Director of CCF. “Volunteers are very much at the heart of our organization, and we’re proud of the difference their efforts have made in the Cottonwood Canyons.”

The mission of CCF is to work to continuously improve the environments of Big and Little Cottonwood canyons through education and stewardship. CCF was created, in partnership with the Cottonwood Canyons ski areas and the U.S. Forest Service, to help educate the public on the canyons’ importance as a watershed and how to promote their ecological health.

“CCF aims to educate as many people as possible who utilize the canyons so their interactions with this unique environment are as careful and sustainable as possible,” said Walthers. “We also aim to create ways we can all give back to a natural environment that gives so much to us, including our drinking water and just an amazing place to be and recreate.” “It’s important to take this step to give back if we wish to continue to enjoy the area into the future. And we feel fortunate so many people in our community choose to give back by participating with us in these projects,” Walthers said.

CCF reaches thousands of people through its educational programs each year, including the Wasatch Wildflower Festival, Tour with a Ranger, naturalist tours and more.

Some highlights this year:

• CCF Education Programs: School Field Trip Program.
Developed in Partnership with the Salt Lake City Watershed, this program is linked to 4th Grade Utah Core Curriculum and includes fall and summer Stream-Side Science Trips at Silver Lake and Winter Snowshoe Ecology field trips. This year, 2,411students participated and volunteers contributed 261 hours for training and guiding.

• Tour with a Ranger.
Naturalist-trained volunteers lead nature tours at the four Cottonwood Canyon ski resorts, and interact with the public to provide watershed, public lands, natural history and ecological information. This year, volunteers gave 5,668 hours of service in this education program and reached over 8,000 people.

• Wildflower Festival.
Volunteer guides lead wildflower walks for the public over three days at the four resorts to celebrate the wildflower blooms and to create a careful interaction with the wildflowers in this peak season of summer visitorship. Volunteers educate visitors on ecology of the area, watershed, and leave-no-trace ways of celebrating this resource. This year, volunteers contributed 690 hours of service for training and leading tours.

• On-the-ground Stewardship Programs.
CCF’s environmental stewardship program also included 190 volunteers contributing 475 hours to pulling invasive weeds, and 672 volunteers contributing 4,139 hours to building and maintaining trails.

CCF was founded in 2002 and has a 10-year track-record of delivering quality education programs and on-the-ground results in its stewardship programs. It is an independent, non-political, 501(c)3 organization.
