5 Blocks Youth Mixed Media Artwork at UMFA

5 Blocks
Youth Mixed Media Artwork

5 Blocks Youth Mixed Media Artwork Showcased at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.

How do we shape the spaces around us, and how do those spaces shape us? The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) is pleased to present 5 Blocks, an exhibition of mixed media artwork by students who examined questions about the built environment. 5 Blocks will be on view through April 21, 2013 in the Emma Eccles Jones Education Gallery at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, in the Marcia and John Price Museum Building at the University of Utah.

5 Blocks resulted from collaborations between Hawthorne Elementary School in Salt Lake City, Granger High School in West Valley City, and educators from the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Over the course of the 2012 spring semester, the elementary and high school students explored the history, design, development and future of five-block areas near their schools. Through a variety of media, 5 Blocks communicates what the students discovered when they left the classroom and engaged with their neighborhoods.

Using all five senses, Hawthorne Elementary students discovered past and present stories of a five-block area in Salt Lake City. The students experienced their community as a dynamic place of change and expressed their findings through photography, sketching, sculpture, painting and writing. Visitors to 5 Blocks will encounter a three-dimensional cityscape and collage created by the elementary school students and UMFA educators.

Granger High students focused on a bustling, commercial five-block area in West Valley City. They researched the city’s revitalization efforts, examined the area in terms of design and management, and learned about West Valley City’s General Plan. In response, the students expressed their visions for the future of their neighborhood through digital prints and both wire and ceramic sculpture.

During the planning of 5 Blocks, UMFA educators consulted with Damon Rich, a nationally recognized city planner who currently serves as the Urban Designer for the City of Newark, New Jersey. Rich assisted the UMFA in piloting new curricular approaches to connect the UMFA’s education programs to architecture and planning in Utah.

“This partnership provided a number of wonderful opportunities for my students,” said Andrea Heidinger, teacher at Granger High School. “This project was especially unique because students had a chance to work with and learn from artists and urban planners. The artistic results that came from the community explorations and discussions yielded a rich and diverse range of artwork of which the students can be proud.”

5 Blocks is supported in part by the Utah Arts & Museums, with funding from the State of Utah and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support provided by The Williams Foundation. For more information about this exhibition and others coming to the UMFA, visit www.umfa.utah.edu.

In this exhibit, the desert mountains are austere, the valleys parched, trees sparse, and colors more than occasionally monochromatic, offering a visual playground for this collection of black and white images.

Man-made threats to this vast area include drought and desertification brought about by climate change and depleted aquifers, increased mineral extraction, excessive ORV use, and expanded hazardous waste storage. The wilderness quality of Utah’s West Desert is by no means guaranteed.

“Utah’s West Desert, In a Different Light.”

Jeff Clay In this second exhibit from Clayhaus Photography at the UAEC, artist Jeff Clay will offer up his collection, “Utah’s West Desert, In a Different Light.”

The black and white photographs presented in this study represent a sampling of images taken in Utah’s desert regions. To the west and south of Salt Lake City is the beginning of the expanse known as the Great Basin. Utah's part of this Basin and Range landscape is known as The West Desert. In this region the desert mountains are austere, the valleys parched, trees sparse, and colors more than occasionally monochromatic. However, the often dramatic play of light and shadow, clouds and sky, water and rocks are perfectly suited to black & white imagery.

Though comprised of numerous high mountains, many herds of pronghorn and thousands of square miles of wild lands, there are only about 125,000 acres protected in two Wilderness Areas: Cedar Mountains and Deseret Peak. Another dozen sections of the West Desert were set aside by Congress and the BLM as Wilderness Study Areas. Their status remains in flux as does the future of many other Inventory Unit Acres studied under the 1999 Utah Wilderness Study. Man-made threats to this vast area include drought and desertification brought about by climate change and depleted aquifers, increased mineral extraction, excessive ORV use, and expanded hazardous waste storage. The wilderness quality of Utah’s West Desert is by no means guaranteed.

All of these photos were captured with a variety of infrared-sensitive cameras and converted to B&W. With infrared B&W photography, skies and water can take on an inky blackness, clouds ‘pop’ in dramatic fashion, foliage becomes milky white and grass is often mistaken for snow. Depending upon atmospheric conditions, images can be topographically sharp or soft and gauzy with a ghostly dreaminess. Whether it is a calm autumn day on some unnamed peak, a wintry morning in a forgotten desert valley, or a tempestuous spring storm afternoon on the Great Salt Lake, Utah’s West Desert can be a fascinating study for one willing to see things in a different light.

Jeff Clay

About the artist: Jeff Clay, of Clayhaus Photography, is a photographer of gothic cathedrals and mediaeval villages, modern architecture and cityscapes, abstract patterns of light and shadow, remote desert mountains and the vast Colorado Plateau. He employs different photographic techniques and tools including infrared photography, black and white conversion, bracketed exposure blending, and the panorama format. He has had solo shows as well as group gallery exhibits and won a number of professionally-judged competitions. He is currently exhibiting his work at the Local Colors of Utah Gallery and the Utah Art and Environment Collaborative.

This first show of the Ririe-Woodbury’s 49th season masterfully combines audience favorites and restaging of groundbreaking works creating a performance with something that everyone can enjoy.

• “50 Years,” (1996) by nationally renowned performance artist and choreographer, Ann Carlson, is an innovative take on the passage of time according to the perceptual calculations on the tribe. Carlson, currently an artist in residence at Stanford University, has gained notoriety and received multiple awards for her work, including a 2010 American Masters Award.

• Charlotte Boye-Christensen, Ririe-Woodbury’s Artistic Director, will also premiere “The Finish Line,” her exciting new work inspired by the ultimate run – the journey through a relationship.

• “Lines to Read Between,” (2005) is Australian John Utans’ investigation of the ideas of images and landscapes. The work uniquely uses images on TV screens throughout the stage as a striking set for the work.

• Charlotte Boye-Christensen’s award-winning dance, "Turf,” (2009) surrounds the idea of territorialism and how men and women approach the idea of space differently, is presented on the heels of its successful showcase at The Rose Exposed.

• “GRID” (2011) by New York choreographer Brook Notary, has quickly become an audience favorite at Ririe-Woodbury, brilliantly juxtaposing complex dance structures and a strikingly simple stage setting culminating in a sensational work that leaves the audience astounded.

FOUR also marks the first season performance of dancer Mary Lyn Graves, who joins the company from Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she danced with Tulsa Ballet.

Season tickets are still available at ririewoodbury.comArtTix.org or by calling 801-355-ARTS.
