Utah Symphony Performs "The Songs of Billy Joel and More" with Michael Cavanaugh

Michael Cavanaugh

Utah Symphony Performs The Songs
of Billy Joel with Michael Cavanaugh

The Utah Symphony and Principal Pops Conductor Jerry Steichen will be joined by Grammy- and Tony Award-nominated entertainer Michael Cavanaugh to perform The Songs of Billy Joel and More in the opening concerts of the Utah Symphony’s 2012-2013 season Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8 at 8 p.m. in Abravanel Hall.

Michael Cavanaugh, who was handpicked by Billy Joel to star in the Broadway musical Movin’ Out, has been called “the new voice of the American Rock and Roll Songbook” by Billboard Magazine. Cavanaugh was nominated for both a Grammy Award and a Tony Award for his role in the musical, which featured Billy Joel’s music.

The Music of Billy Joel and More features Cavanaugh as pianist and vocalist as he performs Rock favorites including “Piano Man,” “Pinball Wizard,” “Uptown Girl,” “Just The Way You Are,” and “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant.” The orchestrations performed by the Utah Symphony will add new layers to the music and enhance the memorable tunes.

This will be Michael Cavanaugh’s first appearance with the Utah Symphony. Michael’s numerous symphony performances include invitations from the Boston Pops, Indianapolis Symphony, National Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony and the Cincinnati Pops.

Tickets for the performances can be purchased by calling (801)355-ARTS (2787), in person at the Abravanel Hall ticket office or by visiting www.utahsymphony.org.

About Michael Cavanaugh
Michael Cavanaugh is the New Voice of the American Rock & Roll Songbook. A charismatic performer, musician and actor, made famous for his piano/lead vocals in the Broadway Musical Movin’ Out. Michael Cavanaugh was handpicked by Billy Joel to star in title role and evokes a style rivaling the Piano Man. Michael appeared in the show for 3 years and over 1200 performances, receiving accolade after accolade, which culminated in 2003 with both Grammy and Tony award nominations.

Michael began playing at age 7, when his parents bought their first piano. Encouraged by family and friends, and inspired by his hero Billy Joel, Michael formed his first band at age 10 and began playing local functions, fine-tuning the craft that would become his chosen career. His first full time gig as a musician was an extended engagement in Orlando Florida at a piano bar called Blazing Pianos. In January of 1999, Michael received an offer that would unknowingly change his life, with an opportunity to play Las Vegas at the famed “New York, New York Hotel and Casino.” It was there that Billy Joel spotted Michael and joined him on stage one fateful night of February 2001. It only took 2 songs before Billy was convinced that he had found his new Piano Man, Michael Cavanaugh. Michael closed up shop at New York, New York and moved to New York City to work alongside Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp, to shape the Broadway Musical that would be called “Movin’ Out”.

With the close of Movin’ Out at the end of 2005, Michael began touring in his own right, creating a show that reinterprets the modern pop/rock songbook. Michael soon became one of the hottest artists in the corporate/events market. He continues to perform worldwide for company and charity events as well as sporting events including the PGA tour, the US Open and the Indy 500. It wasn’t long before symphony orchestras discovered Michael’s talents and audience appeal. He accepted his first orchestral booking, “Michael Cavanaugh - The Songs of Billy Joel and More” which debuted in April of 2008 with the Indianapolis Symphony and continues to tour. In October 2008, he signed with Warner/ADA to distribute his first CD titled “In Color”. In June, 2010, Michael debuted his second symphony show in the "Generations of Rock" series entitled "Michael Cavanaugh: The Songs of Elton John and More" and continues to tour both symphony productions.

‘Shed Raising’ Thursday at Community Garden

‘Shed Raising’ at Community Garden

Volunteers from Salt Lake County, Home Depot, Tuff Shed and the community will raise (build) a shed, picnic table and benches Thursday morning for the Creekside Community Garden at Scott Avenue Park in Millcreek Township. Julie Peck-Dabling, Salt Lake County’s Urban Farming coordinator says the shed will house tools and gardening materials.

Wasatch Community Gardens and Salt Lake County teamed up to submit a grant application to the Home Depot Foundation and were awarded a grant for the shed. Materials are being donated by Home Depot and Tuff Shed.

Group construction was common in the 19th Century for raising barns. It enjoyed something of resurgence in the 1970s when houses, sheds and barn-shaped structures were built. The show stopping scene from 1954’s “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” was the barn raising dance scene. Unfortunately, the dance scene will not be re-created at Thursday’s shed raising.

White Family Donates Land to Salt Lake County

The White Family Donates Land
For Open Space / Shoreline Trail

The size of Salt Lake County’s Grandeur Peak open space has more than doubled.

The White Family (MK White Enterprises) donated 17.78 acres of land directly south of Grandeur Peak to Salt Lake County. That’s in addition to the original 14-acres preserved seven years ago.

“I am pleased that Salt Lake County, through the White Family’s generous donation, is able to expand our preservation area,” says Mayor Peter Corroon. “Cooperation is alive and well; it works and Grandeur Peak is proof.”

The County officially accepted the donation at Tuesday’s County Council meeting where the Mayor recognized members of the family for their generous contribution to the quality of life our residents.

Grandeur Peak is located on the south side of the mouth of Parley’s Canyon above Wasatch Boulevard. The original parcel was preserved as open space in the spring of 2005. The new 17-acres will be used for open space and an extension of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.

UMFA Announces New Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art

UMFA Announces New Curator
of Modern and Contemporary Art

Following an international search, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) at the University of Utah is pleased to announce the appointment of Whitney Tassie as the organization's new Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. Tassie fills an important role that will strengthen the UMFA’s position as Utah’s premier visual arts institution.

In her curatorial capacity, Tassie will create a cohesive vision for the growth, management and interpretation of modern and contemporary art at the UMFA. She will organize rigorous exhibitions of 20th and 21st century art, including the continuation of the UMFA’s salt series of projects highlighting emerging international artists. Tassie will work closely with University of Utah faculty and the UMFA’s Young Benefactors, a donor affinity group dedicated to supporting the museum’s modern and contemporary art collection. Tassie will also create contemporary art programming that furthers the museum’s commitment to excellence and relevance.

“We are thrilled to welcome Whitney Tassie to the UMFA. We are confident that her fresh energy, great eye, scholarship and creative curatorial ideas will bring incredible value to students and the broader community,” said Gretchen Dietrich, UMFA executive director. “She made a tangible difference in the art scene of Chicago, and we look forward to the extraordinary art experiences she will bring to Salt Lake City, the University of Utah, and the region.”

Over the past seven years Tassie served as the Director of Monique Meloche Gallery in Chicago, where she curated six to eight annual exhibitions of work by internationally renowned contemporary artists. In 2011, she co-founded Gallery Weekend Chicago, a groundbreaking annual weekend focused on promoting and enhancing Chicago’s contemporary art scene to collectors and curators. From 2002 to 2005 she worked as an exhibitions and curatorial assistant at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art in Ithaca, New York, where she contributed to education, collections, exhibitions and curatorial work. Tassie holds a master's degree in modern art history, theory and criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in art history and archaeology from Cornell University.

“I am delighted to be curating in Salt Lake, a city that is clearly experiencing a period of growth,” said Tassie. “I look forward to strengthening the UMFA’s connection to and dialogue with the international contemporary art world.”

Snowbird is offering free Aerial Tram rides to active and past Military personnel and their families, as well as a discounted lodging rate of $89 plus taxes and fees for opening weekend, Aug. 18 and 19. Oktoberfest food includes bratwurst, sauerkraut, apple strudel, pretzels and Bavarian roasted almonds. New this year, Snowbird will be offering a wine and cheese booth, as well as Belgian Liége Waffles and Pommes Frites. Local Utah breweries will also be featured.

Special Oktoberfest entertainment and activities for children include a new Hi Striker giant hammer game, a roaming accordionist, Shan the Juggler/Magician, Dale the Yo-Yo Man, face painting, caricature artists, and more. Alp horns will chorus the festivities daily at 3:15 p.m. from Hidden Peak.

Grand Oktoberfest will take place Labor Day weekend, and will feature Art Brogli, an original Snowbird Oktoberfest performer, who will yodel and play the accordion. A Grand Procession will take place at 2:10, with the official keg tapping and toasting.

Admission to Oktoberfest is free. Hours are noon to 6 p.m.

In addition, Snowbird will also be offering a variety of summer activities for all ages. The Tram, Peruvian Express Chairlift and Tunnel will be open for scenic rides throughout Oktoberfest. Artistic Changes at Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company

Charlotte Boye-Christensen

Artistic Changes at
Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company is proud to announce its 49th season. This exciting season marks the 11th and final season for Artistic Director Charlotte Boye-Christensen, who, in order to pursue other national and international choreographic opportunities, will step down at the end of June, 2013.

The Copenhagen native has choreographed nearly three works a year in her time with Ririe-Woodbury and the Company is very appreciative of the hard work she has done. During her tenure, she has been involved in several exceptional collaborations, including The Figura music Ensemble from Copenhagen, Denmark, local artist Trent Call, Danish composer Jens Horsving, 4 Mexican artists (who were all former gang members for the work "Lost"), University of Utah professor Eric Handman (with whom she did "Rite of Spring"), and two collaborations with Nationally renowned writer David Kranes and Canadian architect Nathan Webster, the second featuring actor Ethan Phillips. A third one is in the works for Three.

Boye-Christensen has been responsible for bringing many outstanding and notable choreographers to create and restage their works on the Company, including Mexican choreographer Alicia Sanchez , Wayne McGregor from London, Brook Notary, John Jasperse, Australian John Utans, Susan Marshall, Bill T. Jones, Karole Armitage, Ann Carlson, Keith Johnson, and this year German choreographer Johannes Wieland.

“I have loved the creative work that I have done with the company over this last decade,” says Boye-Christensen. “It has been an inspiring and thought-provoking journey. I want to thank in particular the Ririe-Woodbury Dancers, the staff, Shirley Ririe and Joan Woodbury, my collaborators and the community for 10 amazing years of contemporary dance in Salt Lake City.”

“The support of the community has been instrumental in my ability to contribute to the Salt Lake City art scene and I look forward to paying this back - there are exciting new projects in the works!” “The fact that Charlotte has been with the Company for ten years is quite remarkable,” says Jena Woodbury, managing director of Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. “She’s an incredible and prolific choreographer and has been dedicated to developing the physicality of the dancers and creating a diverse repertory.”

“The Company supports her decision to leave and plans to celebrate her legacy. Charlotte is eager to see the Company move forward in a positive fashion and is solidifying our major choreographic collaborations for our 50th anniversary celebration 2013-14. There’s a wonderful quote by Andre Gide, which seems appropriate for Charlotte ‘Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.’ We thank her for her dedication to the Company and wish her nothing but great success in her new adventures.”

Ririe-Woodbury will conduct a national search for a new Artistic Director during the upcoming year.
