Millcreek Community Center Opens

The new Millcreek Community Center is open for business following ribbon cutting ceremonies this morning. The center is located at 2266 East Evergreen Avenue (3435 South), in Millcreek Township.

The Center houses a branch library, senior center and recreation center. It sits on the site where the old East Millcreek Library, Millcreek Recreation Center and County Fire Station once operated.

Today, the site has been transformed into an energy efficient, state-of-the-art facility designed to serve the Millcreek Community with improved library and recreation services and the addition of a senior center.

“It’s been decades since Salt Lake County built a center with multiple missions,” says Mayor Peter Corroon. We think this model is a perfect fit for the Millcreek community.”

As with all new county facilities, the Millcreek Community Center was designed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. Recycled materials were also used as parts of the old gymnasium floor decorate some of the internal walls in the center.

“The vision for this Center began in the community and grew into a partnership with the County,” said Jani Iwamoto, District 4 Salt Lake County Council member. “Today we can see this vision transformed into a larger-than-life reality.”

“The old East Millcreek Recreation Center stood on this site for five decades,” said Michelle Nekota, Director of Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation. “We welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors through its door and we are excited to be back in this community with a facility built to serve the citizens for another 50 years.”

Staff for the County Library branch will be staffed by familiar faces. “Everyone who worked in the old library wanted to come back,” said Jim Cooper, Director of Salt Lake County Library Services. “Everyone who worked in the old Millcreek branch loved the patrons and wanted to be part of the new library.”

Aging Services Director Sarah Brenna took the opening ceremonies opportunity to encourage volunteers at the center. “Our Millcreek programs are 100% dependent on volunteers,” she said. She urged attendees to consider volunteering or encourage their friends.

Easter Sunrise Service ~ The sunrise service will take place on Hidden Peak. The first Tram will depart at 5:29 a.m., and the last Tram will depart at 6:43 a.m. The service will begin at 6:59 a.m. and is free to the public. Observers should dress warmly. No skis or snowboards allowed. Snowbird will also host an LDS sacrament meeting at 9 a.m. indoors at the Snowbird Center, and an Interdenominational Worship Service at 1 p.m. at Mid-Gad Restaurant.

A free Easter Egg Hunt for children up to 11 years old will begin at 9 a.m. on the Plaza Deck, with eggs hidden on Chickadee. The Easter Bunny will make a special appearance.

Easter Brunch will be served at The Aerie from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and features thyme and honey rubbed ham with spicy mustard; leg of lamb with yogurt, mint, chive sauce; an omelet station and much more. Adults $36.95, children $18.95. Book a reservation by calling (801) 933-2181.

“Secret Dark World” (Premiere), by former Ririe-Woodbury dancer Keith Johnson, is a timely and thought provoking work inspired by the secret languages of children, the brutality of childhood/adolescence, and how these formative experiences shape our lives.

“West” (Premiere), by Charlotte Boye-Christensen explores the sociopolitical and physical landscape of a land marked by contrasts, tension, freedom, and violence – a place of endless vistas, spaces untouched by civilization, and a land of refuge for the free-spirited.

“It’s Gonna Get Loud,” by Tony Award winning Karole Armitage (coined the “Punk-ballerina” by Vanity Fair), is a work that was created for the company in 2009 drawing inspiration from the rawness and directness of the Punk-era and set to an original score by Rhys Chatham.

A work by one of America’s foremost choreographers, Bill T. Jones, completes the program. “Duet” explores pure movement and abstraction and draws on the tension between and the elegance inherent in two people moving together in perfect unison.

Spring has Sprung at Red Butte Garden

Spring is definitely here! The willows are in bloom, the lilac buds are swelling and the earliest spring bulbs are in full bloom. Right now Red Butte Garden is enjoying the first flowers to bloom, the Snowdrops (Galanthus). The rest of the garden isn't far behind and in many of the garden beds you can already see daffodil foliage. They will soon be followed by bunches of miniature Irises (Iris reticulata) in blues and purples, blue Glory of the Snow (Chionodoxa), golden Winter Aconite (Eranthis) and blue Squill (Scilla). These little blooms certainly brighten up the early spring garden. The bees love them too! With cool spring weather, these lovely flowers will last for weeks, and a spring snow doesn't bother them a bit. Come out this weekend to see the earliest buds and blooms on the upper Floral Walk and in the Rose Garden.

9th Annual Deer Valley® Music Festival

Utah Symphony | Utah Opera’s ninth annual Deer Valley® Music Festival will return July 14 through August 11, 2012. The Festival will open with the Music of Michael Jackson featuring James Delisco and continue with additional Utah Symphony performances featuring Pink Martini, Kansas, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Earth, Wind, & Fire. Other highlights include an all-new program based on the popular “Jewish American Songbook” cabaret concert from the 2011 Festival and a reprise of the sold-out “Disney in Concert: Magical Music from the Movies” program from the 2010 Festival. This season will also mark the anticipated return of Utah Opera to the Deer Valley® Music Festival with an evening of “Opera Hits!” on the hill.

For the past eight years, the Deer Valley® Music Festival has brought the best pops, classical, opera, family and chamber music performances to the picturesque mountains of Park City, Utah. Multiple performances each week give patrons the choice of a wide variety of events.

Friday “Summer Symphony” concerts and Saturday “Zions Bank Summer Entertainment” concerts will be held at the Deer Valley® Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater where audience members are invited to picnic under the stars and enjoy Utah Symphony and Utah Opera performances after a day of shopping, hiking or golfing in Summit County. Chamber concerts will be held on Wednesdays in the more intimate setting of Park City’s St. Mary’s Church. Two special return performances of the “Jewish American Songbook” will also be held in Park City’s Temple Har Shalom.
