‘Shed Raising’ Thursday at Community Garden

‘Shed Raising’ at Community Garden

Volunteers from Salt Lake County, Home Depot, Tuff Shed and the community will raise (build) a shed, picnic table and benches Thursday morning for the Creekside Community Garden at Scott Avenue Park in Millcreek Township. Julie Peck-Dabling, Salt Lake County’s Urban Farming coordinator says the shed will house tools and gardening materials.

Wasatch Community Gardens and Salt Lake County teamed up to submit a grant application to the Home Depot Foundation and were awarded a grant for the shed. Materials are being donated by Home Depot and Tuff Shed.

Group construction was common in the 19th Century for raising barns. It enjoyed something of resurgence in the 1970s when houses, sheds and barn-shaped structures were built. The show stopping scene from 1954’s “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” was the barn raising dance scene. Unfortunately, the dance scene will not be re-created at Thursday’s shed raising.
